Keynote Speaker at the EPDE 2009

Conference theme ‘Creating a Better World’

See link http://www.epde09.org/people.html#Keynote

Since graduating from the Royal College of Art, Assa Ashuach now works as practicing designer, and as an academic at London Metropolitan University where his demonstrates an exemplary combination of research, teaching and industrial collaboration. His particular strengths are in creating new products by working with new technologies and developments in manufacturing where design is not just about form, function or emotion, it is about challenging and modifying traditions based on modern technologies. Examples of his work include instructing rapid prototyping machines through artificial intelligence which he likens to a growing process enabled by a DNA code and refers to as Digital Forming ® . He also seeks to develop new materials needed to fulfil a purpose from the outset of a design project, rather than leaving the material selection to the latter stages. Structures, porosity, flexibility and fluidity are all considered early on, and as a result his designs often have a unique and exquisite form.

UCODO.com is coming soon…

UCODO stands for ‘User
Co-Designed Object’ and gets its name from our notion of ODOs (‘Original Design
Objects’) and CODOs  (‘Co-Designed
Objects’) which are the heart and soul of UCODO.

2010 will be an exciting year for UCODO, a revolutionary
platform which is set to democratise design. After much anticipation, the site
will go live early in the New Year. We would like to appologise for the delay to those of you who are as impatient as we are to see the site go live. We had some
exciting improvements that we felt were really necessary for you to enjoy the
UCODO experience even more at launch, so our team is hard at work.

Early in the new year, UCODO  will offer you the freedom to
customise and co-design your very own bespoke products online with no prior
knowledge in structural design. You can let your creativity flourish with the
comfort of knowing that the UCODO team are by your side as you design.

The AI Stool.mgx for materialise mgx, designed to carry a load of 120kg on a sitting surface at a height of 40cm. The challenge was to design a form with the minimum volume required for a seat and then instruct the AI software to calculate the required support.
The AI stool top layer designed to be soft and cushiony.  How can softness be simulated in the virtual environment? One of the great successes of this project was to generate and analyse virtual softness.

Reduce carbon footprint,
The AI software used in this collaboration works rather like finite element analysis [FEA] in reverse. An ideal set of end results were formulated as the starting point and the optimal structure was created by working backwards to achieve that goal. The final outcome met all of the mechanical requirements while only using 1/3 of the anticipated material!

We are now in a process of finalising DIGITAL FORMING® a revolutionary new digital production network that rather than sending a box will send a digital file over the web to the consumer close production facilities. It is the notion of postcode manufacturing that will change products carbon footprint dramatically.

A veggie material is already in development and hopefully will be introduced by EOS the German laser sintering manufacturer in the near future. With this new veggie polymer and DIGITAL FORMING® the postcode manufacturing network consumers could get their products produced locally made bespoke from recyclable biodegradable materials.

About:

‘By experimenting with advanced design and production technologies, the Israeli-born, London-based designer Assa Ashuach redefines both the form and function of everyday products and furniture, while developing a surreal new design aesthetic’

Alice Rawsthorn, director of London Design Museum© 2005 (More… link to http://www.designmuseum.org/design/assa-ashuach)

Founded in London 2003 Assa Ashuach Studio focuses on three main areas:

1. Design and manufacturing of lighting, furniture and lifestyle products

2. Research and Consultancy within the progressive digital design and manufacturing methods, specialising in the polyamide materials and the wide range of the additive layers manufacturing technologies, offering coding of dedicated 3D design and engineering  tools as part of the studio unique and innovative methodologies.

3. Self production of limited edition studio pieces, using new design and production methods to achieve unique forms and aesthetic qualities.

The studio today includes a network of highly skilled specialists from the design, science and manufacturing sectors, using dedicated 3D software development, electronics and engineering as an integrated part of its design methodologies and philosophy.

‘I see my design methods as a dynamic strategy, applied within the visual, physical and social layers of the design process, from concept generation and development of complex mechanisms to interaction scenarios with high cultural and aesthetic value’

Assa has Co founded Digital Forming® and UCODO™, The two London based companies are set to democratise the personalisation of everyday products; introducing the notion of ODO – Original Designed Object and CODO – Co Designed Object, using a set of innovative 3D software solutions for online customisation and shape modification of designed objects. Digital forming was awarded government funding and was invited to show at London’s Science Museum’s 100 years anniversary featuring ‘the future of manufacturing’ showing for the first time shape changing 3d modifiable products designed by Assa for UCODO.com
