3D Print Show Design Competition Hosted by Assa Ashuach and metropolitan works at the in London
Hosted by Assa Ashuach & metropolitan works at the 3D print show the competition is NOW OPEN – closing date is 31st August 2012.
Design an item inspired by this phrase:
‘We should own less but with more value – Things we own need to perform better for us’– Assa Ashuach
You may choose to design a decorative or aesthetic piece, or a practical or functional object. The production space available to you measures 300x300x300 mm, and can be used to create a single object or a cluster of small items. How you take advantage of the production space and the technology, along with your design itself, will be a contributing factor in the judging process.

The museum
Unique in the world, the extraordinary collection of the Plasticarium is a work of passion. Over the years, Philippe Decelle has collected many thousands of plastic pieces from 1960, the year the first entirely plastic piece of furniture was created until 1973, the year of the petroleum crisis, with completely mixed provenance, with an extension for the post-pop period from 1987 to 2000. Plastic indirectly thanks its existence to the Second World War. Parachutes were previously made from silk, a material which primarily originates from Japan. Following the attack on Pearl Harbour, the Americans invented Nylon from which plastic is made. Although the majority of Belgian haughtily ignore this little gem in the setting of home art deco, numerous major museums have already turned to the wealth and originality of this collection. From TV sets to dress designs, all elements of daily life are shown. Amateurs and major design personalities cross with original editions from Joe Colombo, Verner Panton, Eero Aarnio, and amateurs of contemporary creations see pieces from Philippe Starck, Charles Kaisin and many other designers, both known and unknown, without forgetting the irreplaceable Tupperware products! With the collector himself as a guide, the visits will take the shape of a true meeting, sharing around a passion, an exchange between an expert in plastic and the curious from every direction. New pieces are exhibited during Design September.
The workshop
‘We should own less but with more value’, ’Things we own need to perform better for us’ – Now users can add their personal values and co-design their daily objects at home. Following last year’s Assa studio exhibition and workshop at the Victoria & Albert Museum over London’s design week, we will show a selection of 3D interactive tabletop objects, lighting and furniture designed by Assa, open to play, interact and personalise using the Digital Forming co designing technology.
Assa will be giving a keynote at the 7th International Conference on Additive Manufacturing Tuesday 10th & Wednesday 11th July 2
Assa’s keynote title: ‘User informed objects’ – A shift in the order of use

Read the abstract:
‘Open within boundaries’ the Digital Forming technology.
Introducing the notion of ‘Open within boundaries’ products as files and the ‘Digital Forming’ technology file formats ODO – Original Designed Object and CODO – CO Designed Object, a novel two sided communication platform has been devised whereby the designer [the creator of the ODO] designs both the product and the product user experience as an integral and essential part of the product design process. An ODO file is presented to a user with its own product GUI (Graphical User Interface) within a set of built-in rules and behaviours.
‘We should own less but with more value’ – ’Things we own need to perform better for us’
The Digital Forming concept and notion of objects ‘open within boundaries’ was introduced by Assa Ashuach in his research fellowship at London Metropolitan University in 2005. The Digital Forming concept and workflow was created based on the assumption that 3D objects are fundamentally a line of code, a code that can be stored, embedded and rendered as a ‘virtual open product’(open as an ‘Unlocked’) while the fundamental functional parts are ‘locked’ and protected, ensuring full functionality of the end product. The reconfigured product can then be sent to production using the wide range of the additive layer manufacturing within the ‘postcode (local) manufacturing network’ in the city landscape.
Adding the element of TIME the new ‘Training Objects’ technology
‘Harnessing user’s selective and collective consciousness, the optimisation of products through the processing of user behaviour patterns’…
The training objects technology and IP development is part of Ashuach’s ongoing design and manufacturing research streams. Here, user’s personal data is being collected in real time and harnessed into a feed of essential information. Personal sensor data is streamed into a predesigned 3D virtual, production ready objects. These virtual objects are ‘living’ and evolving in a ‘virtual object incubator’ based upon the live stream of personal data, an essential user information envelope is being created. This live stream of personal user data is driving the objects evolution, adaptation and optimisation. The object will be connected to its essential stream of user sensor data, learning its behaviour patterns and ergonomic characteristics. With time this object will adopt and develop better performance with a better fit to its owner future user.
This new design methodology introduces a shift In the order of use, where the user input and selections are transformed into essential elements, informing the functions and aesthetics of the user future object to be. The notion of ‘User informed objects’ introduces not only a design thinking inverse but the technology which enables the embedding of users personal data in a phase of the ‘no object’ or the ‘object abstract’.

some text from me,
A shift in the order of use – User Informed Objects
In the past several years we have seen a faster technology adoption and a transformation of some traditional values and taboos. The Design and industrial community can recognise that some benefits can lead us into an industrial reality upgrade.
An industrial evolution is happening at several layers of the design process; we can now input the user personal data profile and selections, digitally into the predesigned 3D object before it is physically manufactured. This can
happen in real-time as a virtual co-designing experience or in a passive way in a form of education and product learning patterns. The elements of ‘time’ and ‘object training’ are becoming essential ingredients in the product design and in the developing of new design methodologies.
My research and practice is very much about the innovation and development of new industrial design methodologies. In the center of my development is the digital object as file, and the ‘life’ of an object as a virtual object, before it is physically produced. This is the key difference and maybe the most novel aspect of my practice. Aesthetics, adaptation and reconfiguration of forms, are elements in flux within this new way of designing.
I developed the Digital Forming as a two sided technology that provides the user with an access into an ‘open’ (as with no boundaries) predesigned virtual object that can accommodate the users input in a beneficial way. Objects can be conformed, reconfigured and shape changed within the boundaries set by the designer. It is about designing the object together with the users’ experience of the object, and where objects do not exist as isolated entities but are evolving within a connected city landscape. The city is becoming a connected, production and exchange environment, where a new form of partnership is evolving between the user, developer, designer and manufacturer.

London city as a production and distribution HUB…
Read some text about the digital forming new design method at the Creative Industries KTN blog
a large part of my research and practice is about inventing/developing new industrial design methodologies, in the center of my IP is the digital objects as files, and the ‘life’ of an object as a virtual object – before it is produced. this is a key differentiation and maybe the most novel aspect of my practice R&D since the late 90’s
how can we collaborate on the design and engendering? how can we develop the distribution and management? how can we connect / stay in touch with the user? and how can we stay open to city’s user communities?
